Make delicious healthy Kefir using our organically grown Kefir Grains.

About This Product

Kefir is a fermented and cultured beverage. As far as taste goes, it tastes a lot like a yogurt drink. What makes Kefir so great to have on hand is that it is nutrient dense. It has plenty of B vitamins, potassium, calcium and protein. Not to mention, like yogurt, the probiotics are important. They help improve the healthy bacteria ratio in your gastrointestinal tract. While you can use dairy milk to produce Kefir, you can also choose non-dairy options like coconut milk which makes a lovely smooth Kefir.

Most of the time, Kefir will ferment at room temperature. However, in the winter, it may be too cold for it to heat properly. The milk produced is creamy and tart but where Kefir is different is that it is a lot thinner than yogurt. So, what do you need to make the best Kefir? Kefir grains are the key. We cultivate our own Kefir grains using organic milk (homogenized). It's a daily ordeal, feeding them milk so they grow and multiply. They also grow larger through multiple feedings.

Our fresh grown Kefir grains produce a full flavor profile to create authentic fresh Kefir. When you have Kefir grains, expect them to propagate or to produce more grain. Dehydrated Kefir grains will produce Kefir, but it won't include many of the healthy bacteria and yeast that is produced using fresh Kefir grains. And, dehydrated Kefir grains may not multiply.  Our fresh Kefir grains are harvested on the day that you make your order. Feeding our grains daily with a little milk will allow them to multiply, doubling in volume every ten days or so.

In order to maintain a warm temperature in your Kefir vessel, you should consider fermentation heater belts. These belts will help keep your Kefir grains warm, especially when the colder months arrive. Now that you know where to buy Kefir grains, there’s no reason not to have the freshest Kefir grains possible.

Use the proper strainer to collect all the Kefir grains, especially the baby grains which can fall through some strainers. Our stainless steel strainers are double mesh and their holes are about 1/32nd inch.

Includes 35-38 grams, approximately 2 Tbsp.

  • Made fresh each week

Purchase our Fermentation Heater Belt** at a nice discount to maintain a warmer temperature in your Kefir making vessel, very useful during the colder winter months. **Use our Heater Belt once you start fermenting at least 1/2 gallon or more of milk. Do not allow your fermentation vessel to overheat. Position the heater belt above the Kefir grains/milk so you maintain a temperature of approximately 70-80f. Higher temps produce smaller grains.

Real Kefir grains will produce a full flavor profile, making authentic Kefir. These Kefir grains will propagate, producing more grains. Working with real Kefir grains is easy.  A few minutes each day will make the process simple and produce a superior product. Healthy and probiotic, Kefir is an excellent supplement to your diet. Excellent quality and service!

Posted by Denise M on 16th May 2020

Bought kefir grains from another cheesemaking supplier, and had no luck making cheese or getting the grains to multiply. Bought these kefir grains, received 5 times the quantity I got from the other source, and these are not freeze-dried. They're growing like crazy, and act a lot different. Looking forward to seeing what cheeses taste like with real kefir grains. There is a learning curve for a complete newbie like me, but The Cheesemaker provided excellent support and suggestions to help me understand how to care for my new kefir grains. THANKS SO MUCH!

I have not had ANY success getting the grains to produce the taste of the kefir. Only cottage cheese texture and smell :( I placed them in a cup of milk in the fridge out of desperation. But any suggestion to revive them is welcome. Note from Steve/TheCheeseMaker: Once fresh Kefir grains are revived from their transit time, best to get them in a little milk and go through the reviving period of about 3-4 days. Your issue is a matter of over-fermentation. Refer back to our instructions which will help. Best to monitor the ferment and when the top layers are creamy and thick, strain off that wonderful Kefir and place in fridge. It will continue to ferment so only make enough to consumer within a week or less.

    Very Happy !

Posted by L. Magill on 9th Mar 2019

I live I Hawaii so I was worried about the Kefir Grains dying in transport. Steve worked out the best day to ship and made sure to cold pack them for me. They did survive the trip. Steve is also extremely helpful with the questions I later had about raising and storage of my grains. Very Happy.

    Great kefir!

Posted by Laura on 1st Jan 2019

I had a batch of kefir that I had kept going for 3 years. Then life intervened, and I killed it. I tried the freeze dried grains from snotber supplier - no go, and got my money back. Got a restart of my strain from a friend, but it was yeast contaminated. Oops - I use my kefir not only for smoothies, but to culture my cheese - can’t have yeast in it. Ordered Steve’s, they came quickly, and as advertised, they are plump, happy grains. The doubled size in under a week once they were up and running (per instructions included). I highly recommend these to anyone wanting high quality kefir grains.
